Mobile Marketing spend increasing beyond predictions

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

New figures have confirmed what those in the industry already know: mobile marketing is taking off. Global mobile marketing revenue hit $3.5 billion in 2010.

Mobile marketing is no longer a ‘flash in the pan’ trend, but a serious heavy hitter in the advertising world. The scope of mobile marketing is growing faster than even its greatest supporters predicted, and mobile marketing is now a necessity in a successful advertising campaign. Businesses need to include a mobile marketing aspect in their campaigns to reach the consumers and keep their business practices current.

The major tech companies are helping to drive this greater-than-expected growth, with huge investment of cash and other resources into mobile marketing. Long-term plans are being made to assist in the growth and adoption of mobile marketing, with major players such as Google and Apple leading the way. Mobile marketing is making a play for the lead in the marketing channel race.

Industry analysts support the view that mobile marketing is set to continue strongly, with revenue predictions at a staggering $24 billion in 2015. Revenue streams in mobile marketing are also widening, with new spends coming from in-house innovation, partnerships and other business developments.

While revenue for products, media and fast-moving consumer goods is increasing, many brands are experiencing a large increase in consumer engagement through mobile marketing campaigns.

Businesses can no longer afford to sit back and see how mobile marketing pans out. The market is turning to mobile quickly. Consumers are actively seeking businesses providing mobile marketing options, and these savvy consumers expect businesses to come to their phones. Traditional campaigns no longer bring the coverage and exposure that a mobile marketing campaign provides.

Smartphones, social networking and SMS: what they mean for mobile marketing

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

Generation Y are leading the charge towards a mobile centred world: a report confirms what those in mobile marketing have theorised for a long time. The report concluded that Generation Y mobile users are the key consumer group in mobile marketing adoption, having the technology available to them, and expecting businesses to utilise it in their interactions with them.

The report also shows an 11% jump in smartphone adoption by Americans, with ownership rates now sitting at 17%. The smartphone numbers are even higher in the 18-44 demographic, with 23%.

Along with the adoption of the smartphone technology, consumers are changing their data usage and are more likely to have taken on a larger data plan. This tech + data equation is increasing the demand for mobile marketing, to get businesses exposure in front of consumers who are spending larger amounts of time on their phones. The Report also concludes that this key group will continue to drive mobile technology adoption, which is a significant insight for mobile marketing strategists.

Researchers found that the Gen Y group “live” for longer amounts of time on their phones, with 85% of this group regularly sending and receiving text messages. The overall rate is 57% of all US consumers over 18. This is particularly significant for the most popular form of mobile marketing: SMS. If people are comfortable using SMS for social purposes, they are more likely to do so for business and sales interactions also.

Unsurprisingly, Generation Y also lead the charge on mobile social network usages at 27%, with the general rate at 14% of consumers. Generation Y mobile internet use is also higher at 32% compared to 23%.

While Gen Y users are leading the mobile adoption charge, the older generations are also increasing their use, just not as swiftly as their Gen Y counterparts. While it is tempting to target all mobile marketing campaigns at Gen Y, researchers warn that businesses should not neglect older consumers when designing a mobile marketing campaign, especially as they have a higher disposable income.

Will HTML 5 be available on mobile phones?

Monday, May 9th, 2011

The future of internet is changing and fast. The world’s major players such as Google, Apple, Mozilla, Facebook, and Microsoft are all talking about HTML 5. However, whilst the world waits for the ‘next big thing’ in internet, some of us are asking if the ‘next big thing’ will be available on mobile? If the future of internet is HTML 5, then can one of today’s fastest growing markets keep pace in order to adopt the use of this innovative technology?

Although it has not yet been widely distributed, HTML 5 is actually already active on mobile phones and has been since 2010. In Q2 of 2010 and estimated 350 million phones were shipped with partial or complete support of the HTML 5 format. The recent development of HTML 5 aligns itself neatly with the latest focus of the mobile world, ‘the user experience’. Many may argue that developments are no longer necessary in mobile technology, that they already do enough, but recently the focus has not been on what mobile can do, but how well it can do it.

According to some, this is where HTML 5 comes in. The new web model will allow for the creation of a richer user experience and far more powerful applications on the web than we have seen before. There are already some HTML 5 applications in use but research indicates that user experience is better on native applications. However, as is the nature of mobile and the internet, we are experiencing a rapid development and are seeing more advanced applications every day. To this extent, it is predicted that it shall not be long before user experience for HTML 5 applications is on par with that of native applications.

With access to web browsing being made even more mobile, HTML 5 ensures the next step in the innovative user experience. HTML 5 allows for Offline Support by using an AppCache and Database to store data locally, meaning that in the event connection is interrupted, the operation of the application will continue. Canvas and Video allow for graphics and videos to be added to web pages without the need for plug-ins and on top of all this, thanks to the recent development of dual-core mobile phones, HTML 5 will allow for faster Javascript engines, Graphics accelerators and high performance processors.

So not only is HTML 5 already available for mobile phones, it is already in a rapid development stage, perpetuating the advancement of mobile technologies and continuing the mobile markets role as a revolutionary industry.

Should you integrate your mobile marketing and online strategies?

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Since its inception, mobile marketing has displayed all the necessary credentials to become one of the world’s leading marketing strategies. Vast scope, convenience and an ever-increasing audience base has made mobile a global phenomenon, much the same as the internet was when it first hit households worldwide. Addressing this similarity, one seems inclined to pose the question, is there potential for even greater success with mobile and internet? Should a strategy for mobile marketing be integrated with an online strategy?

In simple terms, yes, a mobile strategy should be integrated with an online strategy, but not being one to be satisfied with shorthand answers, here is a few reasons why. There is of course going to be the bonus of increased scope and reach to customers if mobile and online strategies should integrate. Already an estimated 5 billion people own cellphones and 1.5 billion people around the world use the internet. However, with mobile already reaching over 3 times the number of people than internet, what advantages can an online strategy offer mobile?

First, online marketing strategies allow you to track real-time results using online analysis to gauge the performance of your marketing campaign. This real-time tracking allows for a second benefit in that online marketing strategies can be changed “on-the-fly.” By observing and tracking the progress of your advertisements and marketing efforts, you can make the decision to change a graphic or wording and do it without any problems. This means being able to tailor and customise marketing aesthetics and features without having to halt the campaign or start over. This compliments the world of mobile perfectly. One of mobiles key facets is that it is available on the go and around the clock and so being able to track and alter the campaign without detracting from its accessibility is of vital importance.

Another feature that the integration of online strategies could produce is an introduction of multimedia content such as audio, video, blogging, email, social media, and ongoing newsletters into mobile strategies. With these already being the norm in many online marketing strategies, an introduction into mobile marketing strategies could open up all new possibilities for customer engagement and tailoring of entire campaigns.

With mobile offering all the benefits of exposure and reach, limitless updates, convenience and accessibility, and online marketing offering the ability to track campaigns in real-time, to change a campaign “on the fly”, and to allow for an array of visual, audio and social-media contents, the integration of mobile and online marketing strategies could see a new era in global marketing, and a new era in marketing success.

The World Wide Mobile Industry!

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

In a study conducted by InsightExpress, a digital marketing research group, found that mobile advertising campaigns were four to five times more effective than online marketing. This means that mobile marketing successfully extends the reach of your audience. Why? Because mobile marketing is a more targeted and personalized marketing strategy. In fact by 2012 the mobile advertising spend is expected to exceed $6.5 billion. It seems to me that the mobile industry is fast becoming the cutting edge advertising medium for which companies should market. It is one of the most effective ways to reach your consumers and improve business investment.

The invention of the smartphone, as well as adoption of the 3G and 4G technology, enabled the success of the mobile market as a successful marketing channel and another source of revenue for advertisers and marketers alike. Smartphones are like mini computers that allow users to perform different activities, like surfing the mobile Internet. For example, people today are no longer using their mobile devices as a voice communication tool, as has been its more traditional use; now people are using it to access the internet to obtain news, entertainment, information, etc. Today people are spending an average of 2.7 hours a day surfing the Internet on a mobile device which represents a third of the time Americans spend sleeping and twice the time they spend eating. As people today continue purchasing these devices, the mobile market will continue to grow. In fact, according to Nielsen, the purchase of smartphones has increased 29% in the last six months, and 45% of the survey respondents indicated that their next mobile device will be a smartphone. From these numbers it is noticeable how large the mobile industry currently is and how much bigger it will become. What gave the popularity to the smartphone is clear; and it is that these devices actually go beyond what a feature phone can perform. Smartphones allow its users to explore and communicate in different ways as well as provide access to information instantaneously.

People are consuming information in real time, which begs the question, are companies without a mobile presence missing out on real time dollars? Yes! Local businesses can really be missing out on a huge opportunity if they do not have a mobile website or are not engaging in advertisements on mobile websites. Why? Because more than of all local searches are performed on a mobile phone! Consider the scenario, a young family wants to visit a restaurant in their local town and does a quick search for restaurants to check out menu options. Those restaurants that have a mobile optimized website are more likely to show up in a mobile Internet search versus a restaurant with a regular website, which does not render well on a mobile phone and therefore none too popular with the Google in terms of ranking. So, an old ma’ and pa’ shop with excellent food and service, but missing a mobile presence will lose out time and time again to big restaurant food chains that have invested in mobile websites. Mobile searches are actually expected to overpass desktop searches by 2014; so now it is time to invest in a mobile strategy if you haven’t already. While all companies, but especially local businesses, should consider mobile marketing as part of their strategy, all companies should at least, invest in mobile websites to further their audience reach and turn mobile web traffic into foot traffic.

Methods To Become A Good Mobile Marketing Reseller On The Web

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

If you want to become a successful mobile marketing reseller online then your primary concern is probably to get enough clients on your website. Maybe you have realized yourself that simply setting up a web page is no guarantee for high visitor numbers. This article will teach you how to have many many visitor on your site on a daily basis.

The key thing is to understand how search engines find websites on the internet. They use so called “keywords” to find websites and they rank these sites according to the amount of keywords present on them. If a user of the internet types the keyword “cheese” into a search engine, the engine will find all the websites that have words related to “cheese” on them. These words have to be seen in articles in order to make sense.

Such articles are part of the wide range of advertising techniques. To use this method one needs to write an article that talks about the topic of the website. The writing needs to be informative and easy to read as the readers will not put much effort into reading it. Having finished the article one needs to put the keyword two or three times into it. This will make the website accessible for search engines.

A very similar technique is blog commenting. It requires our writing skills as this time we will visit as many blogs as possible and leave some good comments behind. Once we have finished writing our comment we put a backlink into it. When the reader reads our comment he will hopefully click on the link and land on the desired web page. The comment should never be longer than sixty words, otherwise we will loose the readers attention.

Nowadays, many people use videos for marketing purposes. The great thing about this method is that people love to watch videos and they prefer them to articles. When creating such video one needs to make sure that the video shows the positives of the website yet it remains entertaining for the audience. Creating such video is much easier than one would assume as there are so many online guides that explain this process in great detail.

The superb way of advertising is certainly the method of banner promotion. It will cost us some money as we will have to pay for the place on other peoples websites but it will be effective as people are always tempted to click on banners.

The ideas above are designed to help you to become a successful mobile marketing reseller on the world wide web.

Maximizing reach and sales through mobile Internet

Monday, April 25th, 2011

Strong tablet, e-reader and smartphone sales are experiencing huge growth in the US with the PC market left behind in their wake. The sales of mobile devices across the board are growing exponentially and it would seem that America is embracing mobile in 2011 like never before.

Sprinkle a little HTML5 into that recipe and the result is seemingly limitless possibilities for what the mobile Internet is capable of. Marketers in the know are already utilizing the mobile Internet to realize maximum brand reach and ultimately drive sales and growing business beyond their dreams. Let’s take a look at some of the ways of maximizing reach and sales through the mobile Internet.

Statistics reveals that the number of users accessing the Internet via their mobiles is increasing and mobile is fast becoming the number one method of access. Search via the mobile Web is now almost commonplace and consumers searching for a particular brand using their handsets can be automatically redirected to the mobile-optimized version, therefore it makes sense that for most brands and retailers, launching a mobile-optimized Web site featuring device detection should be their first move because it is compatible with most mobile phones.

Next objective is that brands need to build a Mobile Web Identity, with a site that looks good to whichever device is accessing it. It is paramount to focus on your target audience, to get your message across quickly and succinctly and this can be done via everything from standard display banners and branding through to rich media and click-to-video. A simple call-to-action is vital.

A mobile website can be accessible via so many devices from Android and WP7 through to Blackberry and various other platforms. Developers can focus on creating an HTML5-based Web experience to support a vast range of mobile devices. This really is an exciting phase for mobile and savvy marketers are immersed in it already. As Shane Robbins of Microsoft Advertising said “As mobile ads are becoming more tailored and more targeted to consumers, advertisers are embracing the mobile Web as part of their larger digital strategy”.

Whilst this article serves merely as a taster for what the mobile Internet can do to enhance your business, it is hoped that you will want to find out more about how to maximize reach and sales for your brand or business.

Why Mobile Marketing is Customer Service

Saturday, April 23rd, 2011

In this age of mobile technology, 1 in 2 of Americans is expected to own a smartphone by the end of 2011. Add in the huge sales of tablets and it is easy to see why mobile is fast becoming a very effective medium in today’s world of advertising. With smartphone sales expected to overshadow those of PC sales in 2012, clever businesses are now working towards incorporating and integrating mobile into their marketing plans and strategy, whatever the size of their company and irrespective of their target audience of demographic. So why not take a closer look at why mobile is the most effective medium when it comes to dialogue with consumers?

Mobile marketing is incredibly cost-effective and cross-channel friendly and is now starting to show amazing results. Businesses clearly understand its effectiveness more and more and can now see that by adding mobile into the mix, therein lies the ability to prompt immediate consumer response and establish a two-way dialogue with those consumers like never before. As consumers increasingly embrace technology and as it becomes an integral part of their daily living, so they are becoming more amenable to mobile marketing and advertising. This really is the digital age and there is so much room for mobile commerce.

So when it comes to retail activity, how are consumers using their mobiles at the moment? Well, according to statistics 36 percent of consumers indicate that they intend to engage in shopping activities from their mobile device. That leaves another 64% of the market, which advertisers still need to reach. Imagine the potential for maximizing sales! Many smartphone users are already accessing information to make price comparisons and to read reviews on their mobiles and are especially accepting of push content in the form of mobile coupons, special deals, location-based offers and promotions.

It is primarily text messaging, not apps, which reaches the widest range of consumers but it is not just the technology of SMS in itself but it is what the SMS enables in the overall marketing objective. SMS programs have many opt-in methods, all of which should be activated, including email, Web site, point of sale promotions and Facebook and Twitter pages. So many aspects all working together to enhance the brand and business and this is why mobile is now the most effective medium for initiating dialogue with consumers.

We have just scratched the surface of the potential of mobile marketing within this article, so if you haven’t yet added mobile marketing into your advertising strategy, now is the perfect time. Find out more – take a closer look at what it can do to enhance your business.
